Physical Wellness


A healthy lifestyle is one which helps to keep and improve one's health for optimal well-being and functioning. Physical wellness encourages proper care of our bodies through physical activity, proper nutrition, physical safety, and mental well-being. When these elements are cared for together, an optimal balance is met to keep your body in top condition. There are a number of factors in which affect a persons ability to meet this balance. Our built environment plays a substantial role in impacting behaviors that influence health. Factors such as income, age, gender, race and ethnicity, education level, socioeconomic status, and disability status all influence physical wellness. Addressing these factors is a critical component to improving the health and well-being of the Greater Nashua Public Health Region(GNPHR) and is on the forefront of the Nashua Division of Public Health and Community Services (DPHCS). 

Food Insecurity

Food insecurity is defined as the disruption of food intake or eating patterns because of lack of money and other resources. Hunger refers to a personal, physical sensation of discomfort, while food insecurity refers to a lack of available financial resources for food at the level of the household. It does not exist in isolation, as low-income families are affected by multiple, overlapping issues like affordable housing, social isolation, health problems, medical costs, and low wages. Many do not have what they need to meet basic needs and these challenges increase a family’s risk of food insecurity. Effective responses to food insecurity will need to address these overlapping challenges.

Weight Management, Physical Activity, and Nutrition Work Group

Data from the 2017 Greater Nashua Community Health Assessment (CHA) reported that weight management, physical activity, and nutrition is a top priority for the Greater Nashua Public Health Region (GNPHR). Through the 2018-2021 Greater Nashua Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP), the Greater Nashua Weight Management, Physical Activity, and Nutrition Work Group was created with the goal to increase the number of adolescents and adults in the healthy weight range in the GNPHR.
