Case investigation and contact tracing are essential intervention in a successful, multi-pronged response to COVID-19. Prompt and coordinated actions, including case investigation and contact tracing, may inform decision-making about strengthening, focusing, and relaxing mitigation strategies.
By law, Governor Lee’s Executive Orders dictate a statewide approach to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Shelby County Health Department has been delegated authority to issue local orders or measures related to the containment or management of the spread of COVID-19, which includes contact tracing and case investigations.
Pursuant to state law, corresponding regulations, and directives, employers must report the positive case to the Shelby County Health Department for purposes of contract tracing and individuals must cooperate with the Department by providing records or other information necessary to carry out the purposes listed above for contact tracing.
Employers can assist the health department by providing further identification of potential contacts who worked in the same area and on the same shift, hosting a site visit for health department personnel to observe the workplace in order to make workplace-operation recommendations to help prevent further spread of the virus, and facilitating communication with employees.
